Last Thursday, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) published the latest statistics of passenger traffic carried out at local airports. Data included in this statement cover the period from January to the end of November 2018. According to information provided by HCAA, Greece is still enjoying growing popularity. This year, over the past 11 months, the number of passengers served at Greek airports increased by over 10% compared to the same period last year.
This is tantamount to the fact that Greek airports have broken through last year's record passenger traffic. From January to November this year. the number of passengers increased by 5.6 million and in this period reached a total value of 61.3 million passengers. It is worth noting here that most of them were people using international connections, which constitute about 62% of all flights carried out at Greek airports.
HCAA also provided detailed traffic statistics in November. The number of passengers served throughout this month was higher by almost 14% compared to last year. Local authorities are particularly pleased with the growing number of foreign passengers, which increased by over 17% and totaled 640,000. people. In part, this is due to the work done towards extending the tourist season.
In November, the busiest airports were Athens, Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes and Chania. They served respectively in order of: 1.6 million passengers, 428 thousand. passengers, 167 thousand passengers, 67 thousand and 59 thousand passengers.
At the end it is worth noting that the airport in Sitia once again found itself in the airport group, which this year show the largest increases in passenger traffic. In the period from January to November, over 60,000 passengers used the airport. travelers. This means that during the 11 months of this year, passenger traffic doubled compared to the same period last year.
