Moni Arkadiou has a special meaning for the Cretans. The events that took place here in 1866 made this beautiful monastery a symbol of the struggle for freedom and an expression of rebellion against the Turkish occupation. If you have visited this place, you have certainly remembered the remains of gunpowder and the remains of the victims.
On November 9, 1866, Turkish artillery destroyed the entrance gate to Moni Arkadiou and enabled Suleiman's army to enter the courtyard of the monastery. The defending Cretans were pushed to the rooms where gunpowder was stored. The insurgents, wanting to avoid submitting to the Ottoman army, set fire to the barrels of powder causing a great explosion, which killed most of the Cretans in the monastery. Today is the 152th anniversary of these tragic events.
