Last year, Ryanair significantly limited the network of connections from the airport in Chania . This drastic decision of the Irish carrier was a response to the increase in the costs of operations carried out at this airport. Flight cuts in particular affected regional connections on routes to Athens and Thessaloniki.
It is not difficult to guess that Ryanair's decision suffered the most from the local tourist traffic. According to a recent report prepared by employees of the Cretan Polytechnic, over the seven months of this year, a nearly 25% drop in the total number of passengers using domestic flights has been recorded. This disturbing trend is also confirmed by local entrepreneurs operating in the tourist industry, who this year have fewer visitors from Greece.
Researchers analyzing arrival statistics, however, pay attention to one more disturbing trend. Although at the airport in Chania during the first seven months there was still a nearly 8% increase in passenger numbers, this value is much lower than the national average. At all Greek airports, the number of travelers registered increased by around 18%. This low growth this year at the airport in Chania was mainly due to the very poor situation in July. In this peak holiday season, the total number of passengers was higher by only 2% compared to last year. This result raises a lot of concern about the arrival statistics in the coming months.
According to experts, this year's statistical data on passenger traffic at the airport in Chania is a warning bell for the current manager. It is evident that the development strategy imposed by Fraport is no longer valid only for flights made by low-cost carriers, but also for some charter flights. This season, part of this type of connections has been moved to the airport in Heraklion , which in terms of service costs is much more attractive for carriers.

Teraz rozumiem dlaczego lotnisko w Iraklionie to taki dramat.
