The Janissary Mosque in Chania is one of the most recognizable buildings in the area of the Venetian Port. For a long time, the activity of this place has been focused around contemporary art. Various kinds of exhibitions and presentations of artists' works are organized here. From about a month, the entrance to the interior of the Janczarów Mosque is subject to a fee of 1 €. The decision to introduce tickets was made by the authorities of the Municipal Gallery in Chania, on whose premises exhibitions are organized there.
It is worth knowing that the Janczarów Mosque is the oldest Ottoman building in Crete. It was erected in 1645 in the period when the Turks captured Chania . In 1923, 10 years after the formal union of Crete and continental Greece, the building ceased to function as a mosque. Even before World War II, the Janissary Mosque possessed a minaret, but it was destroyed during bombing.
