Minoan Lines is one of the largest shipowners serving cruises between the most important Greek ports. In recent days, the company has announced that as part of reducing the environmental burden resulting from its activities, it will completely abandon the use of plastic straws in its bars and restaurants. In their place, customers will be served biodegradable equivalents. Minoan Lines is the first Greek shipowner to take such a step.
This is another step aimed at adapting to the environmental management system ISO 14001: 2004 as much as possible. Earlier, the company also undertook other activities with a similar purpose. In all stores on ferries, the use of plastic bags that have been replaced by paper has been abandoned. It is also worth mentioning that the Minoan Lines fleet is characterized by high energy efficiency. The amount of fuel consumed and the value of exhaust emissions is about 25% lower compared to competing companies.
As part of the changes, the company provides its employees with continuous training aimed at promoting attitudes supporting environmental protection. The staff is also sensitized to strive to increase ecological awareness among passengers during cruises.
We hope that other ship owners operating in the territorial waters of Greece will follow the example of Minoan Lines. As you can see from the example of this company, increasing the ecology of its operations does not always have to be associated with the implementation of costly changes or the introduction of modern technologies.
