Chora Sfakion and surroundings (Greek: Χώρα Σφακίων)

Chora Sfakion - view of the harbor

Chora Sfakion is an extremely picturesque mountain village of the mountainous and wild region of Sfakia located in the south-west of Crete. This special placement on the Libyan Sea in a way behind the mountain range of Lefka Ori makes the Chora quite isolated from towns dominated by mass tourism. Currently, access here is not a major difficulty because the roads, although narrow and winding are already covered with asphalt. It is near Chora Sfakion that there are insane streamers picturesquely descending from the high mountains towards the sea. Although we do not recommend some routes for beginners and uncertain drivers, despite the fact that you have to drive through the serpentine towards Aradena, because the road is quite wide, and the views from it will cause you to get out of the car photographs.

The kingdom of trekkers

Chora Sfakion is a good place for active tourists who like hiking. The European route E4 runs nearby, so Chora is an excellent starting point for hiking. And there is a lot to choose from, because the entire Sfakia region is the land of gorges located nearer or farther from Chora Sfakion. The best known is of course Samaria, the longest gorge in Europe, which is crowded by tourists in high season. Other less known gorges located nearby are Aradena, Imbros, Agia Irini, Eligas, Ilingas, Asfendou, Kallikratis, Klados, and Tripiti. The best seasons for such trips are spring and autumn. When planning a trip in the summer you need to keep in mind that in the south of Crete, the air temperature is higher, it is less windy and rainy. In summer, temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees in the gorges. A typical summer heat intensifies the heated narrow walls of the ravines, the lack of air flow and the few places where you can hide in the shade.

Experienced tourists may try to cross the E4 route from Chora Sfakion to Loutro and continue to Paleochory. The next section of the route leading to Agia Roumeli is much more difficult and it is recommended to sail this section by ferry.

A good idea will also be a sea trip along the southern coast. Chora Sfakion has permanent ferry connections with Loutro, Agia Roumeli, Sougia and Paleochora and the island of Gavdos. An example cruise price for an adult from Chora Sfakion to Paleochory is 16 €. Other prices can be found on the following page:
http://www.sfakia-crete.com/sfakia-crete/ferries.html

Chora Sfakion has few permanent residents. In the off-season, this number is around 400 people, who are employed mainly in fishing, tourism, growing olive trees and grazing goats and sheep. For tourists, the town offers hotels, studios, private apartments, taverns, markets, ATMs, post offices, taxis and boats that can be used, for example, for beaches.

In the past, Chora Sfakion did not escape the occupation of Venetian, Turkish and German bombing during the Second World War. However, like all Cretans, the inhabitants of Sfakia always resisted the occupants, and the mountain chain that surrounds the city was conducive to this task. This is where, after the lost Battle of Crete, the last troops of the Allied forces from Crete to Egypt evacuated. In total, almost 15,000 people escaped in this way. Currently, the monument next to the port reminds of these events.

How to get?

Sfakia is 70 km from Chania and 150 km from Heraklion. To get here by car the easiest way is to follow the New National Road and head towards Vrises. After driving off the Nowa Droga Narodowa, go straight ahead. Although "simply" is not a good enough word because the road is very winding and before Sfakią turns into regular streamers led by the Imbros gorge. When streamers are finished, the road is forked and turn right. After just over 3 km, we reach Chora Sfakion.
You can leave your car in a paid urban parking lot. The payment is made for the whole day.
It is worth bearing in mind that at the end of the day, there is an increased traffic on the Sfakia exit road because touristsThey arrived at the evening ferries and change into cars and coaches and return to their hotels.

Agia Galini is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the south coast of Crete. This small town overlooking the Messara bay is teeming with life during the summer months and provides all necessary tourist facilities. Beaches, emerald sea, caves, the Daedalus and Icarus myths and the old hippie climate make this village now a favorite destination for many tourists. gość PiotrWie : My w tym roku wybraliśmy na wczesną wiosnę La Gomerę że względu na cieplejsze noce - w zeszłym roku byliśmy na Sifnos i Santorini w terminie 15 marca - 7 kwietnia i wieczorem w pensjonacie było po prostu zimno - ogrzewanie klimatyzacją niewiele daje.
