On Wednesday afternoon, a large fire broke out in the area of Ierapetra on the southeastern coast of Crete, which has not yet been extinguished. The situation is critical, the fire is out of control, and strong winds, reaching 8-9 degrees on the Beaufort scale yesterday, and even 11 degrees last night, continue to hamper the extinguishing work and create new fire spots. The destruction in the coastal zone and in the more mountainous areas is very extensive. There are burnt houses, businesses, tourist units, villas, hotels, greenhouses, but the full picture of the situation is not yet available. Yesterday evening, calls were sent to people in the towns of Ferma, Agia Fotia, Galini, Achlia and Koutsounari for immediate evacuation.
On the night from Wednesday to Thursday, with the support of the police and civil defence, around 1,500 people were evacuated from their homes and holiday homes in the affected areas. Most were transported by buses to safe places in Malia and Hersonissos. Several dozen people spent the night in indoor sports facilities in Ierapetra. Some people had to be evacuated by boat directly from the beaches because the fire had cut off land routes. The local community is providing a lot of help, providing water and rooms for those in need.
Residents of other threatened areas are terrified and desperate, fearing for their property and animals.
Today, from dawn, the efforts to contain the active fire front, which stretches from Agia Fotia to Ferma, have been resumed with the help of firefighting helicopters. There are 44 fire engines with 230 firefighters on site, carrying out the operation. Five more fire engines have arrived by ship from Athens to reinforce the local fire brigades that have been battling the flames for hours. Everyone is watching with great concern the titanic efforts of the fire brigade, which is trying to contain the spread of the flames.
Unfortunately, according to the forecasts, pyrometeorological conditions will continue to be unfavourable, the wind will remain strong, reaching 7-8 on the Beaufort scale, which will worsen the already dramatic situation.
