June 29 - 5th level of fire hazard, Samaria closed

With the beginning of summer, the topic of fire risk in Crete returns. According to forecasts published on civilprotection.gov.gr , tomorrow the entire island will be under an extremely high risk of fire. It is rare for this highest level 5 to apply to the entire Crete, unfortunately tomorrow we will be dealing with such a situation.

Tomorrow (June 29) the trail through the Samaria Gorge will be closed

Level 5 means that the risk of fire is extremely high, the number of expected fires will probably be large, and each of them can become large if not extinguished in time. The weather conditions that are expected in the coming days are high temperatures and wind. This is a dangerous combination that always favors fires.

Closed Samaria and ban on movement in sensitive areas

For this reason, tomorrow (June 29), among other places, the Samaria Gorge will be closed. At "5", there is also a preventive ban on movement and staying in strictly protected ecosystems, Natura areas, parks, groves and forests, and trails and other sensitive areas. This also applies to the E4 trail on the sections Balos-Falasarna, Krios-Elafonisi, Agia Roumeli-Sougia-Gialiskari;

Violating this ban may result in a fine of 300 euros.
