From the beginning of 2025 to mid-June, 27 rescues were carried out on Cretan trails. 18 people were injured and 4 people unfortunately died from their injuries. Most of the people who needed help on the trails were hikers who ignored the weather conditions and their own fatigue, or underestimated the difficulty of the route. The majority of rescues took place in canyons, mountains and on isolated trails, and only one incident involved a beach in Crete.
Evacuations from difficult trails, transport of the injured from steep slopes, canyons and inaccessible mountain areas, and even night rescue operations in difficult weather conditions are now everyday life for firefighters and other local services. In Crete, it is the fire department that takes part in all rescue operations, even in inaccessible areas of the island. Unfortunately, the above statistics will increase with each month, because the high season is just starting.

The current report confirms what Cretan firefighters know best: every expedition, no matter how beautiful the trail, involves risks that require appropriate preparation. It is worth keeping this in mind when planning your hiking trips. In the meantime, we encourage you to read our article on this topic:

Nikt nie uświadamia turystom skali trudności i wymaganego czasu, aby dotrzeć do zatoki. Panie w sandałkach. Dzieci. Money. Money. Money.
