This weekend Greece will celebrate Easter. This is a special year because for the first time since the pandemic there are no travel restrictions. Greek citizens can finally spend the holidays as they usually do, i.e. with family and friends. The last days are the time of traveling and returning home.
Only over a dozen thousand people have arrived to Chania and Heraklion over the last week by ferries alone. There is also a lot of traffic at the airport. In recent days, more than 20 planes land here every day. Some visitors return to their homeland from other regions of Greece or from abroad. After reaching the port of Souda or landing, they continue to their home towns. There are also many guests who have chosen this time for their holidays, so hotels, guesthouses and villas for rent have high occupancy rates ranging from 70 to 90% depending on the destination. In some cases it will even reach 100%.
Easter is also a time that Greeks use for short holidays - both domestic and foreign. This year, one of the most popular destinations is the island of Corfu, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete and Zakhyntos. Of the smaller islands, Patmos, Chios, Lesbos, Syros, Skyros and Kythira are very popular.
When it comes to foreign destinations, Greek citizens prefer holiday trips to Italy, Spain and southern France. They are equally eager to visit European capitals: Paris, Budapest and Vienna.
Another industry that will experience a siege in Greece on Easter is gastronomy. Earlier this week, booking lists for venues were already closed for the entire holiday. As the president of Heraklion prefecture for food and entertainment points out, it is currently difficult to find a free table in most of the famous establishments located in the city center. There is a lot of interest from both locals and foreign visitors.
