Rapidly rising fuel prices caused by the four-week war in Ukraine triggered the first reactions from carriers. This week, Greek ferry operators announced that ticket prices for ferry connections between the mainland and the islands will increase by around 10-12 percent. These companies also announced a 10% price increase for the transport of vehicles.
Some operators have already raised prices, and those who have not yet done so will announce a new price list at the beginning of April. What will the increases look like in practice? Even the cheapest economic tickets connecting the continent with the islands will cost around 4-5 € more compared to current prices. For example, the price of an economy ticket from Piraeus to Mykonos will increase from € 40 to € 44, the cost of a ticket on the Piraeus-Patmos route will increase from € 43 to € 47.5.
A very likely consequence of the protracted conflict are further price increases. Therefore, in order to counteract further increases, Greek shipping companies are planning to introduce austerity plans. They assume reducing the speed of ferries, connecting parts of routes, reducing the frequency of ferry connections, and in extreme cases, even removing some connections and routes can be expected.
At the same time, in order to mitigate the effects of rising fuel costs, shipping companies called on the Greek government to, inter alia, introduce a limit on the prices of marine fuels or reduce VAT on ferry tickets from 12% to 6%.
