The driver who was driving through the picturesque Kourtaliotiko gorge today was unlucky and extremely lucky at the same time. Stones fell from a rocky slope of the gorge from a height of 300 meters and some of them hit a passing car. The vehicle was seriously damaged and its condition can be seen in the attached photo and it speaks for itself. Fortunately, the driver did not suffer any injuries.

The Directorate of Technical Works in Rethymno decided to close the road through Kourtaliotiko for 24 hours in order to remove rocks and stones from the road. During this time, southbound drivers can pass through the adjacent Kotsifou Gorge. This road has been opened to traffic due to this exceptional situation. Security and renovation works are underway in this gorge until the end of January.
At the same time, the services drew attention to the fact that there is uncontrolled grazing of sheep and goats on the slopes of the gorge, which increases the likelihood of rocks breaking off and increases the risk to road safety. Perhaps this is not the only reason for today's accident. Just three weeks ago, a rockslide also occurred in this gorge. Appropriate actions are to be taken to end this practice and prevent further rockslides. At the same time, the services appeal to animal owners to move them to another place.
