In the first days of the new year, comprehensive data summarizing the tourist season in 2023 finally appeared. Last year, Crete, which is the largest tourist destination in Greece during the summer season, was visited by a record number of five million tourists from 35 countries around the world.
All tourist traffic was received by the two international airports on the island, located in Chania and Heraklion. It is worth emphasizing here that both recorded an increase in the number of arrivals. At Heraklion airport, the increase in the number of international arrivals was almost 5%, serving 3.6 million tourists. The smaller airport in Chania welcomed 1.4 million tourists, and last year's increase in arrivals was 8.6%.
As the data show, the market from which the largest number of tourists came last year was Germany. And although there were slightly fewer German tourists than in 2022, the number of 1.15 million is still impressive. The second place in this respect was taken by the British (780,000), who numbered slightly more than in the previous tourist season. Third place goes to the French (440,000), fourth to the Dutch (220,000). The Dutch were followed by Poles, who came 22% more than a year earlier. It is also worth noting that Romania is a dynamically growing market. The presence of tourists from this country doubled compared to the previous season and in 2023 amounted to over 95,000 visitors.
It is also worth noting that when comparing data from the main European countries with the previous season, it turns out that the number of tourists remained at a similar level. The exception is Switzerland, because this year the number of tourists from this country decreased by 21%. Just like last year, there were no tourists from Russia in Crete due to sanctions. At least when it comes to direct flights from Russia.
An interesting fact is the other end of this list, i.e. which countries from which the fewest tourists came to Crete. If the data is to be believed, the fewest people came from Lebanon (4 people), Croatia (21) and the United Arab Emirates (44).

Podwyżka podatku to strzał w stopę greków.
