Today, November 26, is World Olive Day. This plant is a permanent element of the Cretan landscape, and olive groves can be found almost all over the island. It is typical for Crete that in addition to young and middle-aged trees, you can also find many trees whose age is estimated at several thousand years. Interestingly, despite their old age, most of them still bear fruit.
A direct product obtained from olive trees, i.e. olive oil, is also the main export product of the island and a permanent and very healthy component of the daily diet of Cretans. Some local producers produce oils with excellent parameters, i.e. low acidity and high polyphenol content.
Unfortunately, this year olive oil producers are experiencing many difficulties, as we have written about several times on our website. The extreme heatwave caused the trees to bear only a small amount of fruit. The olive harvest is therefore several times lower than in previous years, and the expected amount of pressed oil will be lower than the demand for it. This situation resulted in an increase not only in the prices for the current harvest, but also in the prices of last year's olive oil stocks.
Two years ago, producer prices were at the level of €3.5 per kilogram of olive oil, at the beginning of this year they increased to €4-4.5 per kg, and now they have reached the level of €8-8.5. The rapidly rising price brought further problems for producers. Thefts of olives and olive oil are reported almost every day. Farmers fear every day that they will become victims of gangs that raid fields and warehouses. The number of these incidents is growing rapidly and there is no indication that this practice can be stopped.
What's worse, thieves robbing olive groves are extremely ruthless. Using electric saws, they cut off entire branches from trees, which they then transport to their warehouses, where they collect the fruit. Unfortunately, as a result of such a practice, in addition to the loss of current production, tree owners will also incur losses in the coming years because the damaged trees will no longer bear fruit.
Local newspapers often quote shocking stories of robbed farmers who lost tons of olives and thousands of euros. Special olive-shaped chips were supposed to help put an end to this practice, and they were supposed to sound an alarm whenever the trees moved unusually. However, at the moment neither this nor protection or monitoring bring the expected results.
