Samaria is the most frequently visited gorge in Crete and one of the key trips offered by travel agencies. Last season, this unique park was visited by nearly 170,000 people. tourists. This year, even though Samaria has been closed twice for long periods of time, it still manages to maintain an upward trend in the number of visitors.
During the conference of the Organization for the Natural Environment and Climate Change organized in Chania, this year's season was recognized as one of the most difficult that the Cretan national forests have had to deal with. The opening time of the Samaria Gorge has been shortened like never before due to the several-day heat wave that occurred in July and a serious accident involving a tourist on the trail that occurred in August. Both of these events resulted in the decision to close Samaria.
This is not the first time that the gorge has been closed due to the high level of fire risk and extreme temperatures, but only this year did it last for such a long time. However, a tragic accident on the trail caused by a previous earthquake required the immediate closure of the trail and the evacuation of tourists from Samaria. The subsequent uncertain seismological situation required longer monitoring before it was deemed stable and the decision to reopen was made. Let us recall that the incident took place on August 13. After that day, the trail was made available again only on August 24. As a result of both events, a large number of high season days were lost. Unfortunately, the peak of holiday traffic is the only opportunity for the inhabitants of Agia Roumeli to earn money that will allow them to survive until the next season. The village located behind the trail welcomes hikers every day, who can recuperate here after a several-kilometer walk.
Fortunately, September has been favorable to visitors so far. Mild weather conditions and the absence of unforeseen events resulted in the largest number of tourists on the trail. If there are no unforeseen events and the weather is still favorable, the gorge should remain open until the end of October.
