After yesterday's earthquake, which contributed to a rock slide in the Samaria Gorge, scientists are constantly monitoring the seismological situation in Crete. After Sunday's quake, which measured 4.9 on the Richter scale, aftershocks were expected. However, so far they have not appeared. For this reason, Efthymios Lekkas, a professor of geology at the University of Athens specializing in natural disasters, said he was concerned about the evolution of the seismic sequence.
He supposes that in the region of yesterday's quake, as well as throughout Crete, there may be further tremors up to 6 degrees on the Richter scale, although of course one cannot be 100% sure about this.
Due to Sunday's earthquake and the accident that took place in the Samaria Gorge, by decision of the vice-governor of the prefecture, large gorges and trails in western Crete were closed. Due to the risk of rock landslides, the Samaria Gorge and Agia Irini were considered particularly dangerous. They are also gorges often visited by tourists. They will remain closed tomorrow for fear of further landslides. Lekkas, expressed confidence that the Samaria Gorge will be closed until the situation is fully stabilized. In addition, the trails will require cleaning of stones and boulders or possible repairs. Probably tomorrow evening there will be an official announcement on this matter.
Lekkas also points out that Samaria is a protected natural area where human interference cannot be significant. For this reason, major safety work cannot be carried out. Tourists entering the ravine area must be aware of this and should not stay for a long time in the most dangerous places of the ravines.
In addition, the authorities of the prefecture of Chania recommend great caution to those who decide to visit Glyka Nera (Sweet Water) beach located on the southern coast of Crete. If any of you are going to this place in the near future, under no circumstances should you approach the foot of the slope, because there is a very high risk of falling stones in this place. This phenomenon may especially occur in the event of successive shocks. In our opinion, extreme caution in the near future also applies to other beaches of southern Crete located in the immediate vicinity of the mountains.
Also, the authorities of the Rethymno regional unit recommend avoiding trips to gorges and other hiking trails with strong rock formation.
We remind you that yesterday a tourist was seriously injured in Samaria, who had the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately, as a result of his injuries, doctors had to amputate his leg. The injured man remains in a serious condition, although doctors believe that his condition is slowly stabilising.

Tak przy okazji - z którego roku pochodzi pierwsze zdjęcie? My zwróciliśmy uwagę na tą tablicę w 2012, ciekawi mnie ile lat nie była poprawiana.
