Due to the very high temperatures prevailing in the prefecture of Heraklion, the opening hours of the archaeological sites have been changed. Availability restrictions apply from Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23. Details can be found later in this news.
The Minoan palace in Fajstos , excavations in Gortyn and Matala will remain closed to visitors between 12.00 and 17.30. The Agia Triada stand will be closed between 12.00 and 15.30.
On the other hand, the Minoan palace in Knossos and Malia and the Venetian fortress of Koules in Heraklion will adjust the opening hours taking into account the current temperatures between 12.00 - 17.30.
Today in Crete, the highest temperature was recorded in the Chania area on the Akrotiri peninsula. The thermometers showed 42.6 degrees Celsius there. It was, of course, the temperature in the shade. At the same time, it was the highest temperature recorded in Greece today. Temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius are expected this weekend, and a third heatwave is expected from Tuesday.
