Due to the persistently high temperatures in Crete, there is still a very high fire risk. According to the information published on the civilprotection.gov.gr website on Tuesday, the fourth, or almost the highest, level of fire risk is expected for the entire area of Crete. In accordance with the guidelines and regulations in force in Greece, this situation has a number of consequences related not only to extreme caution, but also to restrictions on travel and sightseeing in Crete. It is worth noting that during the period of increased fire risk, it is forbidden to enter some forest areas and some hiking trails.
At Step 4, sections of the E4 route between Falasarna and Balos, Krios - Elafonisi, Sougia-Gialiskari, Sougia-AgiaRoumeli are to be closed. At Step 5, the ban will apply to the Samaria, Imbros, Aradena, Topolia and Agia Irini Gorges, as well as the path to the Balos Lagoon, and the trail to the Kalergi Refuge. It is worth bearing this in mind, as entering an area excluded from traffic can be quite expensive. The administrative fine imposed for such an offense can be up to €300.
