Huge parking lot at the Kourtaliotiko gorge

In addition to the obvious attractions such as famous beaches, monuments or popular picturesque villages, Crete boasts many little-known tourist treasures. One of such attractions used to be the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, which together with the local waterfalls is an extremely phenomenal place. Unfortunately, however, currently writing that it is not a very popular place is definitely not true. And how many people come here is evidenced by the fact that the local authorities decided to build a giant parking lot for tourists who want to see Kourtaliotiko.

The new car park is located at the exit of the gorge towards the village of Asomatos. According to the declaration of Yannis Tatarakis, the mayor of Agios Vassiliou, it will be possible to park up to 300 cars at the same time. Personally, we are very surprised by the need to handle so many vehicles. However, the mayor claims that the construction of the car park was necessary due to the growing problem of cars parked along the road leading through the gorge. Vehicles left by tourists not only hindered the passage, but also limited visibility, which provoked dangerous situations. It is worth noting here that the road through the Kourtaliotiko gorge is one of the most popular routes leading to the tourist town of Plakias or to Preveli beach.

On the positive side, it is worth noting that the use of the car park will be completely free. At least for now. Completion of construction works, including signage, is scheduled for next Thursday.

Kréta nagyon szép! Ám annyira bővül a turizmus, félek ez megállíthatatlan és el fogja veszíteni a sziget pont azt a báját, ami miatt szeretjük.
