Last Friday, July 7, on Pachia Ammos beach in Stavros, volunteers found a nest of Caretta caretta turtles. We immediately explain that this is not the well-known and popular "Zorby" beach in the bay, but a wild, larger beach facing the open sea. When the characteristic traces left by the turtle were spotted in the sand, the nest was immediately marked and secured so that it would not be accidentally destroyed. The birth of a new generation of turtles is expected 50-60 days after nesting.
It would seem that this is good news, but unfortunately, a sewage pumping station is to be built near this place. This arouses great indignation of people involved in the observation and protection of turtles, and the sewage pumping station itself is to be built just a few meters from the shoreline. Theoretically, Pachia Ammos is quite a large beach, but the morphology of the seabed makes only a small part of it suitable for turtles. Easy and safe entry into the water occurs only on a certain section. Not only turtles benefit, but also the inhabitants of Stavros and tourists looking for more peace and space.
Additionally, turtles need quiet, peaceful places without confusing artificial lighting during the breeding season. The construction of a pumping station in this place would mean not only a high risk of water pollution, but also constantly generated noise. Not only the animals but also the people who, after starting the pumping station in this place, would not be able to use the beach and bathing area would lose out.
The Stavros Environmental Protection Association protests against this construction. It announces that it will continue its efforts to protect the beach and prevent the construction of a sewage pumping station a few meters from where the Caretta caretta lay their eggs. Once again, he appeals to the City Hall to change the location of the pumping station and look for a location for it away from the coast. Caretta caretta sea turtles are an endangered species and are gradually losing their nesting sites. Therefore, it is the duty of people to protect them.
