This year, the local authorities introduced restrictions on car parking at Elafonissi beach. However, this is not the only place where such a solution has appeared. In the town of Kaliviani in Kissamos Municipality, the construction of a parking lot is due to be completed in the next two weeks. And this is, as it turns out, the first step to reduce car traffic at the famous Balos.
Existing car park near Balos lagoon
Kaliviani is located at the foot of a promontory along which a road is leading to the Balos lagoon. In Kaliviani, the road turns north and quickly turns into a well-known gravel road. It is here that a municipal car park is being built, where 300 cars will be able to park. In recent days, a team of contractors has started earthworks and it is estimated that the project will be completed in the first two weeks of July.
The construction of this car park will allow the municipality to achieve its goal of reducing car traffic on the road leading to Balos. This solution, in principle, will also allow to avoid difficulties in moving on this road and reduce the risk of accidents. Up to 100 cars will be able to park in the existing car park located near the beach. After it is full, no more vehicles will be released outside of Kaliviani. The only way to get to the beach will be to leave the car in the parking lot that is being built. Further transport of tourists from Kaliviani is to be provided by minibuses, which will take people to the end of the gravel road, i.e. to the site of the currently functioning car park.
Cars parked along the road to Balos
Although there will certainly be people who will not like this solution, it is worth emphasizing its advantages. In addition to reducing car traffic, minibuses will travel to the end of the gravel road. During the season when crowds come to Balos, only people who come here early in the morning have a chance to park in the parking lot itself. The rest of the people are forced to leave their cars along the road, which extends the access to the beach by up to 2 kilometers one way.
Unfortunately, at the moment we do not know only the answer to the question: will parking in Kaliviani be payable and whether you will have to pay for the minibus ride and how much.
