If everything goes according to plan, Crete is preparing for a real treat for all lovers of hiking trails in Crete. In the near future, an agreement will be signed at the Ministry of the Environment in partnership with the municipalities of Chania and Kissamos for the revitalization of the route connecting the archaeological site in Falasarna with the Balos lagoon. The refreshed 14-kilometer path is to be included in the network of national hiking trails. The currently existing trail connecting these two places is classified as difficult and every season the services intervene on it.
The specific purpose of the contract is to conduct appropriate research related to the identification and mapping of the new route. These works are to be carried out taking into account the already existing paths and former hiking trails. According to the assumptions, the newly laid out route will connect the older sections of the route into a coherent whole. As part of the planned activities, the agreement provides for the creation of recreational areas and rest areas along the trail.
During the implementation of the project, all works are to be carried out using environmentally friendly materials. This is a particularly important aspect in relation to the fact that a large part of the trail will run within the Natura 2000 area.
We must admit that if this project is implemented, it will be a new interesting tourist attraction, especially in the context of active spring trips to Crete. Certainly, for many people it will be quite an interesting proposition for a day trip to the Balos lagoon. We keep our fingers crossed for more similar initiatives.
