A family of American tourists, who is vacationing in Crete, experienced an unusual meeting last Tuesday during a cruise to Gramvousa and Balos. When they were sailing around Cape Spatha on the Rodopou peninsula in a rented dinghy, a whale unexpectedly appeared near the dinghy.
According to the vessel's captain Alexis Valianos, the mammal was about 15 meters long and behaved very friendly. Valianos said the animal followed the boat, dipped under it, turned on its side. He seemed to enjoy this unexpected company.
The Americans were initially speechless with surprise, but once they had overcome their fear, positive emotions took over. The captain also said that if it wasn't for the presence of customers on the dinghy, he would certainly dive. He claims that he has never experienced such a joyful encounter with a sea animal.
The whole meeting lasted about 30 minutes until finally the whale left and the family could continue their voyage to Balos. Certainly, however, this unusual meeting with the other overshadowed the rest of the trip. It must be admitted that tourists from America will have something to remember about their holidays in Crete!
