The first months of the year are the moment when the tourism industry tries to predict what the tourist season will be like. The high level of bookings received in the first quarter raised expectations for another very good year in tourism and the achievement of new records. Unfortunately, however, there are many indications that optimistic expectations and prophecies about the future may have little to do with the hard reality. The current situation on the Greek tourist market was best summed up by Antonis Gelasakis, vice-president of the Association of Tourist Offices of West Crete. He said that "the event we expected will not take place". The current occupancy rate for July and August is around 60%, and the forecasts for the autumn months are also no better.
After a good start to the season, the influx of new bookings for holidays in Greece stopped. All this has resulted in the current estimates of achieving the assumed goals being generally pessimistic. The initially expected record-breaking data on the number of tourists, and thus the forecasted revenues, have already significantly diverged.
High prices caused by inflation, increase in energy costs and, consequently, much more expensive holiday packages resulted in a change of preferences in tourist traffic. In addition, very competitive offers from countries such as Turkey result in a decrease in interest in holidays in Greece.
So far, the weakest link in Greek tourism in terms of arrivals is mainly the island of Mykonos, which shows a decrease in air arrivals of 24.3% in the first five months of this year compared to 2019 and a decrease of 20.4% compared to last year.
The bad streak of Mykonos consists not only of very high prices, but also notoriously violated building regulations. Numerous inspections carried out recently on this island have questioned the legality of the functioning of some facilities that were built without the required permits and contrary to applicable legal regulations.
It is worth emphasizing, however, that the overall decrease in bookings and the deterioration of forecasts concern many Greek destinations. Despite this, the belief is still dominant that at the end of the year the goal brought by 2019 will be achieved. Let us remind you that 32 million arrivals and 18.3 billion euros of tourism receipts were recorded then.
Konstantina Svynou, president of the Institute for Tourism Research and Forecasting and vice-president of the All-Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers, says Greece has demand, but it's a two-speed demand. Some areas fare better and some worse. With more optimism than some of her industry colleagues, she estimates that 2019's "numbers" will be met and surpassed. More pessimistic is shown by Antonis Gelasakis, mentioned at the beginning of the article, who says directly that "what we expected did not come." May was not as dynamic as previous months, and what is worse, June and high season months also do not show any particular dynamics. As Gelasakis concludes, it will be a good year, but not the one expected.
Unfortunately, the decline in interest in holidays in this beautiful country is not the only problem that not only Greece will face this year. As shown by statistical data from the Bank of Greece, the average expenses that travelers incur in their holiday destination are also falling. The purchasing power of the average tourist has decreased and they now spend much less than in previous years.
Unfortunately, these declines translate into other sectors directly related to tourism. An example can be gastronomy, the car rental market, or directly the market of local travel agencies that offer tours to tourists. According to Gelasakis, this year's demand for car rental for holidays is not too high, which means that prices are slightly lower than last year.
Gastronomy saves its skin a bit differently. The Cretan Consumer Protection Association has recently received many complaints about food being overpriced. There are also reported cases of charging for products that the customer did not order and for which an additional fee was added to the bill. It turns out that charging even 10 € to the bills for bread, water, olive paste, i.e. products traditionally landing on the tables "to welcome" the guest, is becoming a massive problem. Some even charge their guests for toothpicks, cutlery, etc. accessories. Such practices are a violation of the law. The association calls on businessmen to comply with applicable regulations that exclude such practices. According to the market regulation effective May 24, 2007, all items on offer must be listed in the price list and customers can simply order them.
The deterioration in results has sparked a debate over which part of the travel industry is most to blame for the explosion in package travel costs. For now, the responsibility for this situation is tossed around like a hot potato. Each of the representatives of individual sectors of the industry tries to transfer as much of the blame as possible to other players.
Airline owners point to hoteliers, who in turn believe that the low level of bookings is largely due to the prices of air tickets, which have increased excessively. At the same time, both sides indicate legitimate reasons for their own increases. Airlines cite high fuel costs, while hoteliers cite rising energy and food costs and rising employee salaries. Hotel owners indicate that the bill for an average travel package has increased by almost 50%, as airfares have increased by 35% and hotel prices by only 15%.
Ms. Svynou even believes that the Greek hotel product is still underestimated, and hotel prices have increased by less than 11%. However, this increase does not cover increased operating costs, i.e. wage increases, energy and food costs.
Gelasakis even estimates that the prices in hotels in Crete, where there is a lot of competition, are not high, admitting that there are single extreme cases of above-average high accommodation costs.
The truth, as usual, lies somewhere in the middle. According to Nikos Chalkiadakis, president of the Association of Hoteliers in Heraklion, prices should have a ceiling. Chalkiadakis openly criticizes some price extremes and believes that this is especially important in Crete. In general, average European tourists who do not have a very rich wallet rest on the island. The gallop of prices means that these people give up rest in Crete looking for cheaper destinations.
Ioanna Dretta, the Greek Minister of Tourism, also referred to the issue of prices. In one of the recent interviews, she said that everyone involved must realize that the price of products and services is directly proportional to the improvement in their quality. This also applies to improving the quality of infrastructure and the quality of destinations. In other words, tourists are willing to pay more if they see higher quality. If they do not see it, they will choose competing offers that will offer them more for the same amount.
There is another aspect of the current situation, which we have already written about several times. Customers who nevertheless want to come to Greece for a holiday are looking for cheaper accommodation options. One can mention, for example, AirBnb. In Crete, the number of this type of accommodation has increased significantly and they are capturing more and more customers who have so far chosen hotels. Mr. Gelasakis emphasizes that the current aim is to ensure that such places operate on a par with hotels. In particular, it is about not developing unfair competition, as it is happening now.
Regardless of who is more "guilty" of the whole situation and what the outcome of this year will end, the main goal is that the 30 million tourists who come to Greece every year leave no less satisfied than in previous years. We'll find out in a few months if that's the case.

Bo to jest tak, jakiś czas temu szukałem lokum na Airbnb, wybrałem fajny atrakcyjny obiekt, cena za 14 dni dla 6 osób 12tys z hakiem. Ok biere myślę sobie, zapłaciłem po 12 godzinach cyk rezerwacja anulowana. Kasę odzyskałem po 24 godzinach więc luz szukam dalej. Szukam dalej, cyk jest, cena około 13tys ok biorę ale prowizorycznie pytam się hosta czy aktualne w podanym terminie, pani odpisuje tak i zaprasza do zakończenia rezerwacji. Klikam więc, a tu płatność odrzucona, myślę co do diaska, powtarzam operacje znowu to samo. Więc czytam co tam jest napisane wnikliwie i oczyma mym okazuje się nowa cena 26tys. Host po moim zapytaniu podwoił cenę i zaprosił do zakończenia rezerwacji. Szczęście moje takie że nie miałem takiej gotówki na koncie bo bym zapłacił. Nauka na przyszłość i dla innych przestroga. Ale do brzegu.. ceny porażają, zarówno oferty biur jak i ceny lotów, czy ofert na Airbnb lub booking kosmos więc i chętnych mniej.

Mar Ko W ubiegłym roku podobne praktyki stosowali w niektórych wypożyczalniach samochodów. Ktoś rezerwował sobie auto kilka m-cy przed wakacjami w dobrej cenie, a po przylocie okazywało się, że jego rezerwacja była anulowana a samochód wypożyczony drożej komuś innemu. Rzadko kto po takim doświadczeniu będzie ciepło wspominał wyspę.

Myślę, że to nie tylko problem Greków ale całej branży turystycznej. Po prostu inflacja tak wysadziła ceny, że jest bardzo drogo WSZĘDZIE. Nic dziwnego, że ludzi jest mniej. A będzie jeszcze gorzej jeśli to nie wyhamuje.

My obecnie jesteśmy na Krecie.
Nie wiem jak w turystyce zorganizowanej, ale w tym roku byliśmy dwa razy indywidualnie na Cykladach i uważam że w stosunku do ubiegłego roku ceny wzrosły o mniej niż wynosi stopień inflacji w Polsce

To oczywiste że główną przyczyną zmniejszonego ruchu turystycznego jest zwiększona cena za wypoczynek. Niestety greckie hotele jakością i wysokim standardem nie grzeszą, a ceny z roku na rok są tylko podnoszone pomimo zerowych zmian w obiektach. Nie pomaga też kapryśna pogoda której teraz pewnym można być chyba tylko w szczycie sezonu.

Po kilkunastu latach spędzana urlopu w Grecji, w tym roku skapitulowaliśmy. Ceny poszły znacząco w górę, za tydzień w Grecji można kupić 2 tygodnie w Turcji lub tydzień (w zawsze droższej) Hiszpanii. Mam nadzieję, że przyszły rok okaże się bardziej przyjazny.

Faktycznie Turcja była tańsza w ofercie, chcieliśmy bardzo Majorke ale była naprawdę droga w tym standardzie co chcieliśmy i wyszła Grecja po raz 3 ale zawsze inna wyspa i było pięknie;) na szczęście rezerowalismy wycieczkę jesienią to już bylu drogie ale nie aż tak jak teraz. Zobaczymy jak to będzie dalej w Polsce za wczasy na tydzień też w takiej kwocie jak chce się coś zobaczyć itp.
