It seems that Cretans will experience a real winter this year. After a remarkably warm and snowless January, the Barbara weather front is approaching Greece. According to the forecast, it will bring snowfall, a drop in temperature and strong winds. The biggest snowstorms are expected above all in the higher-lying areas, i.e. mainly semi-mountainous and mountainous areas. Residents of the lower regions of Crete should also expect precipitation of white fluff, although not in such quantities. Particularly violent weather phenomena are expected to occur on Saturday, and a significant drop in temperature is also expected from Sunday. Wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 8-9 on the Beaufort scale. The bad weather is likely to last into Tuesday.
At the same time, to warn residents of the deteriorating conditions, the Secretary General of Civil Protection of the Crete region issued today special alert messages. They warned about taking special care and avoiding traveling on difficult mountain roads. In the case of residents of the higher parts of the island, it was recommended to supply food, fuel sufficient for several days and snow removal equipment. Detailed instructions have also been issued, e.g. in the event that a snowstorm immobilizes people traveling by car. The recommendations also include information on the proper protection of home installations against low sub-zero temperatures, which are not very often recorded in Crete.
