About 50 km from Heraklion in the Idai Mountains massif is the Skinakas Observatory. The very ride to this place is quite a challenge for less skilled drivers and also causes thrills in passengers. Narrow, mountain, but asphalt roads lead to Skinakas, in places devoid of security. For those more experienced in driving on such roads, it is an opportunity to climb to the very top of the 1750 m high mountain, where the Skinakas Observatory is located.
Until 2019, the observatory held several open days each summer, during which it was possible to enter its area and observe the sky through a telescope. Unfortunately, since last year, for obvious reasons, open days are not organized due to restrictions on organizing meetings of people in closed spaces.
This year, however, the Skinakas astronomers began organizing online tours via Facebook events. One of them already took place on July 4, but fortunately another broadcast of this type was scheduled on July 18 in the evening. Thanks to online meetings, basically anyone willing will be able to take part in such an event. The program includes a guided tour of the observatory, sunset monitoring, a description of the 1.3 m long Ritchey-Chrétien telescope and a presentation of nightly astronomical observations. Additionally, it will be possible to ask questions via Facebook.
