Today Greece is celebrating its Independence Day. Celebrations took place all over the country, which, due to the pandemic situation, were quite symbolic and without the participation of the public. Athens celebrated the most splendidly, where shortly after 10 a.m. the military parade, which was the highlight of the 200th anniversary of the announcement of the revolution, began.
If anyone wants to watch this parade, below you can find a video of this celebration.
Also in the early morning in Crete, Chania, a white and blue flag was traditionally raised on the Firkas fortress. At that time, the navy's Aegean frigate was moored at the entrance to the Venetian Harbor. A regular item on the program, which has been present for several years, is also the flight of F-16 aircraft, which take off from the base in Souda. Due to the restrictions, for the second year in a row there were no celebrations with the participation of the public.
The largest Greek flag appeared in Santorini this morning. Its size of 1500 square meters and weight of 160 kg allowed not only to break the Guinness record but also caused problems with lifting it. Not only the dimensions of this flag were an operational challenge, because the strong north wind turned out to be the biggest enemy. Even a crane was involved in this operation, as you can see in the video below.
Rethymnon could also boast a large flag, although smaller than that of Santorini. Here, the Association of Active Citizens of Rethymno Synpolis funded a flag with an area of 310 m2.
It was not only in Greece that you could see this special Christmas atmosphere. In many cities around the world, buildings now turned white and blue. The performance began with the Sydney opera house. Apart from Sydney, Greek colors also appeared on buildings in Melbourne, Brussels, Paris and Tel Aviv, among others.
