Gournes, just over 15 km from Herkalion, is one of the typical holiday resorts located on this part of the coast of Crete. At the height of the normal tourist season, it can be really busy and crowded here, which may be a great advantage for some, and a huge disadvantage for others. While watching the video below, it is worth paying attention to the large number of artificial breakwaters that cut into the sea. Their presence is not accidental, because, like many other towns in the north of Crete, the Gournes coast is not protected against the pressure of strong waves. The task of stone spurs is not only to absorb the energy of the waves, but also to trap sand on the quay.
Although today tourism is the main source of income for the majority of people living in this region of Crete, it is worth mentioning that in the not too distant past, agriculture was the most important branch of the local economy. The plain in the vicinity of Gournes is still known and valued for the fertility of the local land. It should therefore come as no surprise that even today it is nothing extraordinary that in the vicinity of the hotels there are still used farmland and olive groves.
In the past, Gournes was a separate village, but the rapid development of the region meant that it is now located in a multi-kilometer uninterrupted belt of tourist towns, between which it is difficult to find a clear border. The start of this 23-kilometer marathon is marked by Vathianos Kampos, and the end is by the popular Malia. Gournes may also be associated with those who visited the local Cretaquarium , who together with the Hellenic Center for Marine Research, which includes the marine research center.
