October 18, 1937 brought unprecedented weather phenomena to Crete, which resulted in the death of as many as 16 people. Today's "news" is a calendar card presenting the events from 83 years ago.

A tragic flood in Crete

The extreme storms that hit northern Crete that day caused heavy rainfall and caused great damage. These events were described in detail by the meteorologist Theodore Kolydas. He also pointed out that the weather preceding these phenomena was very mild. Therefore, no one expected that than the one coming from Libya would bring such disastrous deterioration of the weather, not only in Crete, but also in central Greece.

212 mm of rain fell in the city of Chania, which resulted in flash floods and, consequently, huge losses. Persistent high water destroyed 56 stores and 47 homes, and the city's road network. In the areas outside the city, the damage was even greater. In some villages, not only houses have been destroyed, but bridges have collapsed, and roads have become impassable. Many domestic animals drowned.

The inhabitants of Heraklion faced a much worse situation, where the storms and rains were even more intense. Fifty residential buildings were completely destroyed and another 200 houses were partially destroyed. The effects of the flood were felt especially by the inhabitants of the district of dzielnicyτω Πατελλών, where the local bridge was also destroyed. As many as 16 people drowned in the entire city. Today it is considered that these were the most tragic events caused by weather phenomena in Crete in the 20th century. Interestingly, this year, after a long period of summer weather and high temperatures, the weather is also expected to deteriorate rapidly in the coming hours, as well as heavy rains and storms.

Cudowne miasteczko
gość PiotrWie : Kolejne rekordy to obraz coraz większego overtourismu Krety.
