For many years, All Inclusive leisure has been eagerly chosen by tourists and enjoys unflagging popularity among them. Attractive prices and great convenience are indicated as the main advantages of this type of vacation. It is worth remembering, however, that the wide range of All Inclusive holidays offered by hotels located in a given region does not always have a positive impact on the development of local communities. This problem was also noticed by the Iardanos Association (Ιάρδανος) which brings together local entrepreneurs from the municipality of Platanias.

In an open letter sent to local media, the organization wanted to point out that the development of the All Inclusive offer available in hotel facilities located in this area of Crete is contrary to the interests of the local community. According to the Association, this type of leisure offered in an increasing number of hotels (including smaller facilities) has increasing consequences for the local economy.
Strong pressure of maintaining low prices of goods and services bought by large hotels offering AI-type holidays causes the deteriorating situation of small and medium-sized family businesses. Many of them are at risk of bankruptcy or the need to transform their activities from independent entrepreneurs to low-paid full-time employees carrying out their activities as part of large tourism companies.
The Iardanos association also points out in its letter that the All Inclusive vacation model is a form of tourism far from ideal for ensuring the sustainable development of the local community. According to them, the system of bands worn by guests of this type of hotel emphasizes the impersonal form of services offered in these facilities. All this means that establishing positive relationships between the service provider and the visitor weakens. Services that are increasingly deprived of local character mean that the unique features typical of a holiday in Crete are blurred. Stays not differing from those offered in Italy or Spain reduce the number of guests willing to renew their holidays in Platanias.
We will only add that choosing this type of recreation is worth being aware of the problems it generates for local communities. Spending almost all holidays in multi-star facilities, you can not only get to know the local nature of Crete, but also know that these facilities have a marginal effect on the local economy. Often, only a small proportion of the total holiday fee is the cost of services provided by local entrepreneurs. The largest hotel chains do not even use local products needed to prepare meals. And yet it is one of the biggest advantages of the island.
