Archelon is a volunteer-based Greek organization that deals with the protection of Caretta caretta turtles in Greece, including Crete. In addition to monitoring breeding areas, she conducts research and works on habitat renewal, and also deals with the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. For several years, we have been closely following reports about Caretta caretta sockets established in Crete and other information that this organization shares. It works with the government organization: Greek Center for Marine Research (HCMR). Archelon recently reported that of the 36 turtles that went to the Glyfada Rescue Center, 70% of them swallowed plastic.
After analyzing the contents of the stomachs and intestines of turtles, over 250 plastic elements were added. On average, 11 plastic pieces, such as bags and pieces of hard plastic, were found in each individual. Most turtles that accidentally swallowed plastic waste are juveniles. Although, according to the project manager, Ms. Eleni Kamberi, most often swallowing plastic waste by sea animals occurs in the oceans, but as it turns out, such cases also already appear in the Mediterranean. Most such turtles are found in countries located in the western and central parts of this basin, much more than in the eastern or southern regions in the regions of Turkey or Tunisia.
