Dikti Cave is one of the many extremely interesting places you will find in Crete. This attraction is a kind of link between the present and the history of ancient Greeks. Once considered the birthplace of the mythical Zeus, it was the destination of many pilgrims. Currently, for over 40 years it has been the destination of thousands of modern tourists again. The fact that this cave is one of the biggest attractions located in this region of Crete, is testified by the annual number of visitors, which is estimated at over 200,000 people.
Residents of the surrounding villages gathered around this place are well aware that the Dikte cave is very important for their community. Not only provides them with the opportunity to enjoy the material benefits arising from the influx of guests visiting this place, but also provides them with easier access to some social services. The mayor of the Lassithi plateau, Yiannis Stephanakis, emphasizes that only thanks to the large tourist traffic this place has its own ambulance and fire station.
At the end of 2018, conservation works were carried out to secure and ensure accessibility in the Dikte Cave. In addition, the interior of the cave was scanned with a modern 3D laser. The effects of this device's work, sent to the Greek Ministry of Culture, provide the basis for further research carried out in this place. The mayor of the Lassithi plateau hopes that the work carried out at the end of last year will be an impulse to launch the next stage of research, the cost of which is estimated at about 900 thousand. €.
If the ministry decides to implement this project, it will be the first major excavation work carried out here after more than a hundred years of break. The data that has been collected to date indicate that there are further corridors under the currently available part of the cave that have never been explored. Yiannis Stephanakis is convinced that there may be another archaeological treasure hidden that is worth discovering.

I Płaskowyż Lasithi, dosłownie za siedmioma górami. Sama jaskinia jest magiczna, zwłaszcza kiedy na zewnątrz szaleje burza...
