The current season seems to be very unpredictable for Greek tourism. At the end of last year, there were signals that about a fifth of the number of trips will be carried out by travel agencies sending tourists to Greece. The owners of hotels who complained about a smaller number of reservations flowing to their facilities also reported a decrease in interest. However, these trends are contradicted by the official data collected during the first four months of 2019 by INSETE and the Bank of Greece. According to these organizations, both the number of tourists visiting Greece and the amount of revenues recorded by the tourism sector increased in the analyzed period.
In total, in the period from the beginning of January to the end of April, about 2.5 million international arrivals were recorded. This means that the number of people visiting Greece in the first four months of 2019 was higher by approximately 283 thousand. travelers. This is about a 13% increase compared to the same period last year. The largest number of arrivals is growing in Athens, where this year the number of travelers increased by more than 16.5%. Slightly smaller dynamics was recorded in regional airports, in the case of which the number of arrivals increased by 8.6%.
The data published by the Bank of Greece on the revenues achieved by the tourism industry look even more interesting. In total, during the first four months of 2019, revenues of € 760 million were achieved. It is a value higher by about 1/3 compared to the same period last year.
We can only guess that a lot of work is at the moment the smallest of heads among economists analyzing all indicators. A lot of dilemmas also have investors thinking about expanding their tourist activities in Greece, as well as travel agents considering increasing the offer of trips. The next few months will give answers to all questions about this year's season. We will follow with curiosity the appearing articles and all reports published by Insete and the Bank of Greece.
