The area of the Old Town of Chania is one of the more buzzing areas of this city. Every year in the high season, this place attracts thousands of tourists who use local taverns, shops and other attractions. For many years in the area of the Old Town there are also many hotels and guesthouses offering accommodation in the facilities located in this very picturesque part of the city. Such a diversified number of economic activities focused on a relatively small area leads to a conflict of interest. Although the current tourist season has not yet started for good, the first complaints about disturbing the silence of the night are directed to the local authorities.
According to the information provided by local authorities, only three complaints about noise generated at night by bars and shops have been received since the beginning of May. Similar signals were also confirmed by the local police, which is currently registering more and more reports regarding the operation of service and commercial outlets playing too loud music.
In most cases, the signals about jamming the quiet night and about playing too loud music are directed by the owners of hotels and boarding houses. Entrepreneurs have been struggling with more and more complaints of tourists staying in their facilities for a long time. Excessive noise reduces the reputation of these facilities and exposes you to negative ratings on booking sites . In the long run, this may unfortunately be associated with a decrease in the number of tourists vacationing in these hotels and guesthouses.
Mr. Yannis Koukourakis, President of the Association of Tourist Agents in Chania in an interview for the newspaper Haniotika Nea, said that his organization was asking for more frequent noise control in this part of the city. Unfortunately, this is the only action that this organization can take.
It is also worth mentioning here that in recent years, a series of actions aimed at organizing the space have been conducted in cities in Crete. Buildings and other infrastructure that have been successfully removed without obtaining appropriate permits are being successively removed. The size of the sidewalks and squares is also controlled, which is occupied by local taverns and restaurants.
Personally, we hope that in spite of everything, this conflict of interest can be solved in a sensible way. However, even taking into account the fact that the area of the Old Town is quite a specific part of the city, it must be admitted that many entrepreneurs go beyond any standards by playing music. They show a complete lack of understanding for the fact that they operate in the area of shared space shared with other entities. When planning your accommodation in Chania, remember to consider this fact when looking for a suitable hotel or guesthouse. Especially if you care about a quiet and peaceful location.
