A few dozen years ago, the village of Fari (Φερί), located in the Fajstos municipality, did not stand out from other nearby towns. Narrow streets and houses full of life were full of residents dealing with their daily duties. At the end of the 1970s, however, this situation has changed. Every year, the number of inhabitants of this town was systematically shrinking. More and more people were leaving Fari looking for a better and more comfortable life in other major cities of Crete and Greece. Today, the old inhabitants of this village are reminded only of ruin houses and a well-kept chapel. It seems, however, that this situation may change significantly in the near future.
Fari became the object of interest of one of the Athenian companies, who expressed their desire to buy the entire village. The owners of the house located in this town unofficially confirm that such talks are conducted. Ultimately, Fari would become a kind of open-air museum, where tourists would be able to get acquainted with the old life of the inhabitants of this village. One of the key aspects on which this investment depends is the consent to the sale expressed by all owners including the ruins of houses in Fari.
You can find out about how this city looks like in the movie above. It was prepared by Nikos Sarantos, who recently went to Fari to confirm rumors about the investment planned by the company from Athens. It is clearly visible that the scope of renovation works required to restore the former look of local houses would be very large. Time will tell if the project will ever go beyond the realm of plans and dreams.
