A lot of snow is constantly falling in many parts of Crete from Monday evening. The cold front of Tilemachos (Τηλέμαχος), which is responsible for the current weather in Greece, brought low temperatures and strong snowfalls. The Athens Observatory warns that snow can also appear in extremely low-lying regions, accompanied by an extremely strong northern wind. This warning is confirmed by today's photos from Rethymno, where snow appeared even on the city beach.

Of course, its amount is not even comparable with a thick layer of snow that covers the higher towns. In linked photos from Anogia you can see what an impressive winter can appear in Crete.
Snow in one of the taverns in Anogia
Anogy, on the last Sunday when Crete was on Crete, the Epiphany holiday experienced a real siege. According to estimates by local authorities, even over 10,000 cars came here. Cretans living in the lower parts of the island went so much in the area of Anogii and Psiloritis just to see the snow. On Sunday, however, he was not here as much as it is today.
The region of Sfakia is also beautiful and winter, especially around the plateau and the village of Kallikratis. Inhabitants of this area received a recommendation to avoid unnecessary travel. Knowing this area of Crete, we are not surprised by this recommendation. The roads here are very narrow and steep.
Snow-covered roads in Crete
In many places local authorities have issued warnings that riding on mountain roads is possible only in chains. This applies above all to the higher mountainous regions near Ierapetra, on the Lassithi Plateau, in the area of Anogia. Moving in these areas is very difficult. Despite the efforts of the road services, it is practically impossible to maintain the passability of all roads. Drivers are asked for very careful and slow driving. In addition, according to the portal flashnews.gr, some of the schools in Chania are closed.
For reasons of safety, some roads have been closed. This prohibition applies, inter alia, to the national road between Chania and Kissamos, the traffic of cars has been redirected to the old national road. The ban will probably be maintained until tomorrow. The local road between Spili and Gerakariou has also been closed.
