Yesterday late in the afternoon there was a very large rockslide in the Kotsifou gorge. Large fragments of rocks along with protective barriers fell from a great height onto the road and even reached the stream flowing at the bottom of the gorge. Fortunately, no one was at the landslide site during this incident. The road is completely closed at this point, and drivers going to the south of the island must use the Kourtaliotiko gorge.

This morning, engineers and experts have been working at the rubble site to assess the situation. After completing the documentation and assessing the damage, the road will be cleared of rocks and repaired. It will also be necessary to rebuild security. During this time, the road through the gorge will remain closed for as long as necessary. The priority of the commune authorities is to ensure safe passage through the gorge area.

The biggest paradox of this situation is that since October last year, the road through Kotsifou has been closed for many weeks as unstable rock fragments were removed. Special safety nets were also installed to protect against rock fragments (we wrote about this in one of our earlier news ). Previously, landslides occurred frequently in this area. As you can see, these works did not bring much effect. Residents of the area reported that seismic activity had recently been recorded in this area, which may have contributed to yesterday's large landslide.

Taknpomyślałam, że pewnie trochę zatrzęsło... A wówczas nawet wykonane prace zabezpieczające nie dadzą 100% bezpieczeństwa. Dobrze, że nikt nie ucierpiał
