Dikte Cave closed to visitors

Dikte Cave is one of the main tourist attractions of the eastern part of Crete, closely related to the beliefs of the ancient Greeks. They believed that this is where Zeus was born, the most important of the Greek gods, ruler of heaven and earth. However, from September 27, this cave remains inaccessible to tourists. Its temporary closure is related to the strong earthquakes that occurred in this area of the island last Monday. The decision to temporarily close the cave to visitors was taken as a precautionary measure to avoid panic among the visitors in the event of repeated aftershocks.

Although other archaeological sites of Crete are functioning without restrictions, the cave, despite the decreasing strength of the aftershocks, remains closed. According to preliminary estimates, Dikte is in excellent condition and completely safe. Since ancient times, it has withstood much stronger earthquakes, as evidenced by the fact that for thousands of years it was invariably a place of religious worship.

Undamaged ancient artifacts have also been found on its territory. An example is the statue of the Greek god Ammon, identified with Zeus, offered in honor of Cretan deities by the pharaohs of the 19th dynasty. This statue was found intact at the beginning of the 20th century and exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

The issue of the protracted closure of the cave for visitors will be discussed at the next meeting between the Mayor of Lassithi and the Greek Minister of Culture. The Lassithi Civil Protection Office offered its help from the very first moment. The cave area should be inspected by a special team of engineers and geologists to allow its operation to be restored and made available to visitors who come here every day. However, to date, the Ministry of Culture and other offices have not taken any reaction, thus depriving local entrepreneurs and the region of Crete of income.
