Fabrics are one of the most common souvenirs bought in Crete. The travel suitcases are filled with tablecloths, cloths, rugs and bed covers covered with traditional Cretan motifs and patterns. Unfortunately, most of this assortment, especially in touristic places, is cheap factory products, not having much in common with handmade products. Handmade products cost accordingly more, because the manufacturing process is much longer. Unfortunately, the laws of the market are inexorable. For 5 € nobody will buy a traditional hand-made product, regardless of whether you buy a tablecloth or a "Cretan" traditional knife.
However, apart from the tourist crap, you can find very valuable and unique products in Crete. They will be distinguished primarily by the high price, quality of workmanship and the uniqueness characteristic of hand-made products.
Before you start looking closely at the goods on offer, it is worth seeing what the traditional weaving process looks like. In today's video, Mrs. Antonia Koutandou shows the next stages of this traditional craft: processing wool and making yarn, and weaving fabrics. This video was recorded by Antonis Daferemos in the village of Axos. It is from this small village located at the foot of the Psiloritis massif that some of the most famous weaving products in Crete come from.
