The beginning of this year's tourist season in Crete is hardly normal. Due to administrative restrictions on operations, hotels and many other places froze all preparations. However, there are also places that must and try to function completely regardless of the current situation. One of them is the Samaria Gorge, where conservation work is currently underway on the trail and that part of the park that is available to visitors. Of course, we already know that this year's tourist season in the Samaria Gorge will not start too soon.
At the same time, however, the authorities of the Forest Directorate in Chania point out that access to the gorge would be possible even in mid-April. Of course, such a scenario would be possible if the coronavirus pandemic did not prevail in Europe and in the world. Finally, it is worth adding that the ongoing works are not only related to the maintenance of the tourist trail itself. No less important aspect of this work is the protection of the ecosystem, which is one of the most important activities carried out by the guards working in the park.
Remaining in the subject of hiking, it is worth noting that this week the authorities of the Messara region signed documents responsible for launching two important projects co-financed from EU funds, whose total value amounts to € 1.3 million. Their main goal is to be to support local culture and sustainable tourism. One of the most important elements of these projects is the revitalization of the E4 route running in this part of Crete.
As part of the budget with a total value of 600,000 € works to be re-marked the route are to be carried out. The project also envisages the creation of various types of information sources easily accessible to tourists. In addition to classic maps, brochures and books, digital-based media will also be available. It is also planned to create an application dedicated for use on smartphones.
As part of the remaining funds, it was planned to create an integrated network of tourist routes (Messara Cultural Route Network) that would connect all monuments and archaeological sites located in the Messary region. The focal point of this tourist attraction is to be the New Archaeological Museum of the region. The route network will also pass by tourist attractions and will also include places such as the Agiofarago gorge, or the gorge of St. Nicholas.
Personally, we hope that the funds budgeted for these projects will be well used. The Messary area is one of those regions of Crete that not only boasts a wealth of historic sites, but also a large number of interesting hiking trails.
