In the olden days, when ship positioning was based mainly on paper map reading skills and astronautical proficiency, the importance of lighthouses was much more important. The characteristic beam of light that they emitted not only warned ships about the proximity of land, but also allowed it to clearly determine the place of its location. And although today the profession of a lighthouse keeper is becoming a thing of the past, it is worth noting that those practicing this profession have their international day. It is on the occasion of the celebration of this holiday on August 18 that the General Staff of the Greek Navy will make available to explore the lighthouse in Drepano in Apokoronas.

It is the only facility of this type in Crete that will open its doors to external guests that day. Visiting the lighthouse will be possible from 10am to 8pm. This facility is located at the northern end of the small Drepano Peninsula, whose name was taken as the name of this lighthouse.
The history of this building dates back to the first half of the 1860s, when one of the French companies undertook the task of building a lighthouse in this place. The location where this object was to be located was not, of course, accidental. The rock cliff on which it was planned to build this lighthouse, not only towered over the bay of Souda, but also created its peculiar border.

Finally, the lighthouse began its work in 1864. This object consists of two buildings: an octagonal tower 7 meters high and a small stone lighthouse house. Over 1912-1913, the Drepano lighthouse was added to the Greek lighthouse network. During World War II, this facility, like many others of military significance, was destroyed by German troops. In 1948, the lighthouse was rebuilt and brought back into operation.
You can find a list of the remaining Greek lighthouses open to visitors on this day from the source news.
