Recently, we wrote on our website that in the case of high fire risk, access to some hiking trails and forest areas located in the middle of Crete will be closed. In recent days, a similar decision was made regarding analogous places located in the western part of the island. It is worth paying attention to this information, as this prohibition will also apply to popular hiking trails run by the gorges there.
As in the case of the previous decision, this prohibition will apply throughout the day (from 00:00 to 24:00), during which the forecasted risk of fire hazard will be determined at level 4 or 5 . The areas that are particularly sensitive are those located in the area of the Samaria National Park. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection decided that on the days of high risk of fire from tourist traffic will be excluded such hiking trails as:
The decision on admission restrictions will apply until the end of the summer fire protection period, ie until the end of October. If in the near future you plan a trip to one of the ravines mentioned earlier, we recommend that you check the fire hazard map each time before your trip. The threat forecast for the next day is published every day after 18:00. The map is available on our website (link at the bottom of the menu), or directly on the website of the Greek office .
