Yesterday, four solar benches were set along the pedestrian routes in Heraklion . These are clever devices that not only allow you to charge a weak battery on your smartphone, but also give you the opportunity to use the Wi-Fi network access to the Internet. It is worth noting that these benches are completely autonomous and do not require connection to a traditional power grid. All energy used to power embedded electronic devices is obtained through solar panels.
Two benches were placed in Heraklion on August 25th
For the time being, four such benches have been set up within the city, including two of them in the area of the pedestrian street along 25 August and Eleftherias Square. Previously, similar devices were also installed in the city of Sitia. Mr. Vasilis Lambrinos, the mayor of Heraklion, announced that the city is willing to make more and more benches available to residents and tourists in the future, which not only make life easier, but are also environmentally friendly.
For now, it is difficult to assess how the functionality of these benches will work in the peak season of the holiday season and whether residents and tourists will be willing to use them. However, what raises our doubts is whether the black surface of solar panels heated by sun rays will not be too hot to sit on it. Let's hope that the creators of these benches are clever enough that even this problem was not a challenge for their benches.
