Today we would like to show you this mysterious photo published on the e-mesara.gr website, which was made in 1986 by Popi Spanakis. In the photo you can see a group of men gathering around a ditch excavated at the edge of a green valley. Among these people there are also two brothers Popi: Yannis and Vangelis. Absorbed with their work, they do not pay much attention to the sister who is taking pictures at the moment. After years, this innocent frame is not only a family memento, but also captures the beginning of the history of one of the tourist attractions in this part of Crete. Below you will find the answer to the question of what place has been photographed by Popi

This small valley creating wetlands covered with reeds has always collected water flowing from nearby sources. The lush vegetation concealing this patch of land, even in the driest months of the year, was a living proof. A place so full of water was already appreciated in antiquity. The local sources were exploited by the former inhabitants of Gortyna . The then name of this region of Crete originated from two words: Ζα meaning a lot and ρέω, or the verb flows. Their combination created the name Ζαρός (Zaros), which certainly explains a lot to you.
No wonder, then, that today in the late 1980s, a decision was made to create a reservoir creating a small lake in this place. Taking advantage of the natural terrain, it was planned that the water flowing here intensively during winter and spring from the Psiloritis massif will be collected here.
In 1986, these plans were implemented. Initial works were carried out to deepen this small basin. The picture taken by Popi comes from this period. All earthworks were completed in 1987. Today, the lake created in this way, which you can see above, is known as Votomos or Zaros. If you arrive at this place during a holiday trip around Crete, we recommend you also a walk to the Rouvas ravine .
