In the latest press release, the Greek Civil Aviation Authority published passenger traffic statistics that were recorded at local airports during the first eight months of 2018. For now, everything indicates that this year will allow for a very positive upward trend in the number of passengers. From January to August 2018, all Greek airports served less than 44.5 million passengers. This means about a 10% increase compared to the same period last year.
Increased traffic was recorded both for international and domestic flights. The number of foreign passengers arriving to Greece over the first eight months was higher by about 9.4% compared to last year. During this period, over 10 million foreign travelers benefited from Greek airports. It is worth noting here that in this group over 1/3 of the people were those who decided to come to Greece in August. It is clear that the last month was very busy for Greek airports.
In August, the following airports were among the five most popular airports with the largest passenger traffic: Athens (2,879,000 passengers), Heraklion (1,467 thousand passengers), Rhodes (1,055,000 passengers), Thessaloniki (835,000 passengers) ) and Corfu (700,000 passengers). Once again, the top five included the airport of Chania, which in recent months enjoys the weaker interest of carriers.
Finally, it is worth noting that the airport in Sitia can be proud of again. Over the first eight months, it recorded the largest increase in passenger traffic from all airports in Greece. In this period, the airport in Sitia served a total of less than 50,000. passengers. This means about 110% increase in traffic compared to the same period in 2017.
