Recently, an interesting development of data collected by the Bank of Greece and the SETE organization was published, which focused on the analysis of revenues achieved by the tourist sector in 2017, broken down by region. One of the main conclusions from this publication is that Crete, next to the southern Aegean region, is the area of the most important importance for Greek tourism.
Last year, both regions accounted for nearly 49% of all revenues achieved in this sector of the economy. In this comparison, the region of the southern Aegean reaching 25.7% (3.65 million) of shares only slightly ahead of Crete, ranked second with a value of 23% (3.26 million €).
It is also worth noting that the highest average spending per tourist was achieved in Crete. Last year, the average tourist spent as much as 678 € during his stay on the island. This is a value higher by around 52 € compared to the southern Aegean region, which ranked second in this ranking. At the opposite end of this ranking was the region of Western Macedonia, where the average cost of stay was only 203 €. For comparison, the average value of expenses of a single tourist for the whole of Greece in 2017 was around 458 €.
Such a large variation in the obtained values of expenditures is mainly due to the specificity of the profile of tourists arriving in particular regions. The low value achieved in the region of western Macedonia is the impact of a large number of tourists from the Balkans who come to Greece with their own cars. On the other hand, the high value of expenses on islands is a result of the dominance of people using air transport. The specificity of this type of tourism is higher expenditure on services such as public transport and car rental.
Over the past year, the average cost of stay in Greece has only slightly changed, increasing by only 1.9%. At this point it is also worth adding that the area of the southern part of the Aegean Sea was the only one of the 13 regions, which in 2017 noted an increase in this indicator. The average cost of stay in this part of Greece increased by around 26 € last year.
