Probably many people today wondered what the fire situation in Crete was like today. Fortunately, in the western part of Crete, everything is slowly returning to normal. There have not been any reports of new fire sources so far. The Cretans began to count the losses suffered over the last two days. According to preliminary reports, the fire consumed 7,000 acres, of which 60% were farmland, and the rest were forest areas. Over a dozen cars and two warehouses have also been burned. The most serious damage has affected olive plantations, vineyards and animal habitats. Unfortunately, a lot of time will have to pass for nature to cope with these destructions. Burned olive trees and viticulture are unfortunately also concrete material losses for the owners of these areas.

However, the most important information is that fortunately there were no deaths in Crete fires. There were, however, serious assumptions that the fires at Apokoronas and Kakopetros were caused by intentional arson. In the vicinity of these two towns masked pits have been found, in which flammable substances are most likely found.
For the monitoring of Greek forests today, the US- based, low-tech, ultra-modern P-8 Poseidon, which is intended for observation and reconnaissance missions, is now included. The aircraft, after patrolling the Kineta area, returned to the Souda base in Crete. In the coming days, he will continue reconnaissance flights over the threatened areas. It is equipped with infrared sensors used for heat detection and a radar system.
Unfortunately , a high fire risk (risk category 3) is still predicted for the entire region of Chania Prefecture, in line with the fire risk forecast table issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. This means that there is still a risk of new fire sources. The fire brigade of the municipality of Chania is in a state of complete readiness. Both residents and tourists should avoid actions that could cause a fire due to neglect. If they see new sources of fire, they should immediately notify the fire service at number 199.

Witam.
